Striking a Tiny Blow for Privacy

Yes, you did reach the website for the DFW Pythoneers... please bear with me a moment.

Our privacy on the Internet continues to be eroded bit by bit, with the most recent attacks being the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) storm re the telecomm companies monitoring all network traffic and ISPs snooping and selling our browsing habits to advertising companies.

I therefore am experimenting (meaning feedback is welcome) with making the websites that I host use HTTPS encryption by default. HTTPS requires x509 certificates, which can be obtained from a certificate authority after submitting intrusive identifying information and while paying for year after year, or they can be self-signed to skip all that.

The problem with self-signed certificates is that they cause browsers to pop-up a scary warning box. Therefore this screen appears when you are about to enter the encrypted site to alert you that this is about to happen. We ask that you simply accept the certificate permanently and then you'll never have to bother with it again. It's not like this is an eCommerce site.
